The former Real Madrid boss, Zidane who left Spanish Gaint in May after leading them to a third consecutive Champions League trophy will replace Santiago Solari, who was in charge for less than five months.
Real Madrid are currently third on the La Liga table and 12 points behind league leaders Barcelona.
Santiago Solari is set to be sacked after a 4-1 win over Real Valladolid on Sunday, which followed a shock Champions League exit to Ajax in a 4-1 home loss and 5-3 on aggregate to the Dutch side.
Former president Ramon Calderon has been reported to have told Sky Sports News last week that Mourinho was the first choice to take over and was approached by the club, but Zidane looks set to return.
Spanish media outlet Marca, has also reported that Solari has already said goodbye to the first team, with Zidane expected to take his first training session on Tuesday before managing his first game back against Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu on Saturday.
